Clean, architectural lines and sumpreme simplicity...No, I am not talking about a new Apple product but about an aquarium, the Fluval Edge by Hagen. I stepped into my neighbourhood pet store in Québec City last Saturday and stumbled upon this very well designed tiny aquarium. The tagline says it all: Add design to your lifestyle!
What struck me while checking out the very well executed and design focused brochure was how the guys over at Hagen had approached the whole thing. Somebody had done some serious thinking: ''Let's sell aquariums to people who don't buy aquariums by focusing on the design element. Lot of people don't want an aquarium because they are a hassle to maintain, don't always look good and you feel you need to be half fish- half man just to succeed keeping the fish alive.
Hagen developed a new product for a new market and according to the petstore owner they are selling briskly. (I am getting one for my home and one for the office).
So what can you do? Start by listening to the people out there NOT buying your products and you might discover an untapped market segment. It's not always about new products in existing markets.
This introduces a pleasingly rtaional point of view.
